Masters of Agriculture

The first-year graduate seminar introduces students to foundational concepts and emerging trends in agricultural. Dive into the Big questions shaping the future of agriculture. This course unpacks the complex challenges facing the agricultural sector, from the environmental sustainability and food security to trade and rural development. Through discussions, case studies, and debates, students will explore how policy decisions impact farmers, consumers and the global food system. 

This course will provide an introduction to the fundamentals of research design. This course provides a frameworks for master's students in Agricultural to understand the foundations in research design. Upon completion of this course, students will understand how research methods are predicted upon the theoretical frame works and research questions or hypotheses derived from a review of literature in the discipline.  

Students are introduced to agricultural development and economic growth theory, with a focus on the factors that drive economic expansion and structural change. The course explores historical and contemporary trends in agricultural and economic development in North America, providing insights into the forces shaping the industry. These frameworks will help explain how growth occurs in developed agricultural economies, the role of agricultural in economic transitions, and the policy implications for sustainable development. 

The course examines leaderships theories and behaviors relevant to the agricultural industry. Students will explore key concepts of effective leadership, communication, and team dynamics within agricultural settings. Through case studies and self assessment, students will develop leadership skills to navigate challenges and drive positive change in agricultural and agribusiness environments. 

This course provides hands-on experiences in the agricultural field through supervised projects and internships with farms, agribusinesses, or community organizations. Students will apply agricultural theories and business principals to real world settings, gaining practical skills and insights into industry practices. Through reflective exercises and mentorship, students will deepen their understanding of sustainable practices and the challenges faced by agricultural professionals.

Taken during the semester of degree completion, students will demonstrate comprehensive proficiency by integrating technical knowledge with core skills and abilities. Students will combine skills acquired throughout the Master of Science program and apply them to a project arranged with the Graduate Program Director. The course is designed to simulate and support teamwork concepts necessary to be successful in agricultural related employment on and off farm.
